Introducing Your Huntingdon Piranhas Club Captains 2024-2025

Neve Taylor

Junior Club Captain

Neve

Hi everyone! My name is Neve and I am in the Youth Compete squad. I hope to be a good club Captain because I have been a school councillor 3 times now and I think I could use my skills to help the club and its swimmers. I have been to many swimming competitions now and I remember my first one at Boston was scary especially when you don't know what to do. But always remember that there are people who will be more than happy to help you out!

I feel I have good leadership skills and would listen well to everyone. Some skills I have is:

Leadership, Listening,Communication and Helpfulness.

I feel these skills would be good in the role of club Captain because I can listen to swimmers and bring forward ideas with their help. I would really like this season to be the best season for Piranhas and I really think with my help we can achieve that.

Marlen Walser

Junior Club Captain

Marlen

My name is Marlen.

I am 11 years old and passionate about swimming and our club. I applied for the position as Junior Club Captain because I would like to be a voice for my teammates. I am supportive and approachable, and I am here for my teammates if they have any issues.

I will listen to them and share their concerns and ideas with the coach. I will ensure that new swimmers feel welcome and included, and get support and advice at their first competitions. I will also make sure we are motivated as a team to do our best and celebrate achievements and efforts.

I love swimming so much, I have made so many new friends and hope to share that experience with others. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Poppy Railton

Senior Club Captain

Poppy

Hi, I’m Poppy,

I am 15 years old and swim in the Top Compete Squad. I joined Piranhas in 2021, back then Piranhas was a lot smaller club so it’s been both interesting and exciting to watch the club grow and squads develop over this time and to be a part of that.

Over the 2023-2024 season, I have really enjoyed being the girls senior club captain and I am pleased to continue in this role. I have supported the club by helping out at a number of the Junior Fenland League meets, taking the lead for some of the land warmups and generally assisting the coaches on poolside. I have enjoyed cheering everyone on, you’ll often see me at the end of a lane shouting encouraging words at my fellow team members. Part of the role I’ve really enjoyed, and would like to continue, is supporting new swimmers who may have been nervous to take part in their first competitive race/meet.

In terms of my own swimming, I continue to improve, regularly achieving new personal best times. I have been working really hard on my fly technique and the perseverance is paying off. I hope that my dedication to improving is something that my fellow swimmers see and that they may view me as role model. When I turn 16 early next year I hope to complete my lifeguard qualification.

At school I am studying sports studies at KS4, for the past year I have learnt the theory of leadership skills. I feel that being club captain allows me to put those skills into practice, in particular communicating with younger peers, sportsmanship, commitment and responsibility.

I’m an approachable member of the team with lots of experience. I feel that this makes me the ideal person to help other swimmers with any questions or issues that they may have.

Noah Taylor

Senior Club Captain

Noah

Hi my name is Noah, I am 14 years of age and I am in the top compete squad. I am really pleased to be one of the senior club captains because I consider it to be a great personal achievement and I want to support my teammates. I have been swimming and competing for as long as I can remember and I know what it feels like to be at your first competition and how terrifying it can be, but I would like to help other swimmers get through it and enjoy the experience of competing. Also, I would pass on my swimming knowledge (for example what drills and sets I find useful).

In my role as club captain I would like to help the younger and less experienced swimmers at competitions, for example at JFL's taking the swimmers down to their races and cheering them and the team on.

My personal goals are to take my swimming to the next level, get lots of new PB's and to be able to spread my knowledge to other swimmers. This year, I have pushed myself to achieve a better time in the 400m freestyle. It's not a stroke that I enjoy too much, but I wanted to participate in other events to broaden my experience in all strokes.

Also, I am a fairly quiet person, but since being club captain I have become more confident around others and feel that I am able to talk to people more.

From my previous time of being club captain I feel like I have been able to suggest my swim training ideas to the coaches. Moving forwards, I would like to be more helpful at galas, for example advising swimmers when to go to their races. I would also help with club fundraising events even if it is just handing out snacks or drinks.

I would like to start my training towards becoming a lifeguard during the next couple of years, so I can put my swimming skills to a greater use.
