West Norfolk Swimming Club’s Junior Fenland League team travelled to Peterborough on Saturday 17th September to contest the final round.

Coming into the evening, West Norfolk found themselves in a three way tie for third place in the league, level on 25 league points with both City of Ely and City of Peterborough ‘B’.

With the top five teams of the thirteen-strong league all competing directly against each other in the same pool for the A-Final, West Norfolk knew that every single race would count in the fight to secure a top three result for their year’s work.

West Norfolk had a strong, steady start to proceeding with four top three finishes in the first four race courtesy of second places for Florence Collison and Eliza Butcher, and a pair of thirds for Samuel Liddell and Thomas-Arthur Jagger.

The consistency continued, as yet more podium positions were racked up by Nellie Chadderton; Toby Turner; William Eagle; Polly Anderson; Ruby Steward Brown; Theo Ryan: Belle Ringwood and Harriet Reeves.

However, as Faith Turner took to the block for the twentieth of forty-five events – the 11 year old girls’ 50M Freestyle – a win had, so far, still eluded West Norfolk. Turner would change that however with a dominant swim to come home first in 36.01 seconds, almost two full seconds clear of her nearest competition.

Shortly afterwards, Turner made it two on the bounce with another victory in the more closely contested 50M Backstroke.

Further first place finishes follows for Toby Turner (10 and Under Boys’ 50M Freestyle); Adam Jackson (11 and Under Boys’ 50M Breaststroke) and Belle Ringwood (13 and Under Girls’ 100M Individual Medley) to end the evening and the 200
Junior Fenland League on a high.

With all said and done, West Norfolk finished in third place in the tightly contested A-Final behind City of Peterborough ‘A’ and Wisbech, thus managing to claim the number three spot in the league that had been so closely fought over all season.
