West Norfolk Swimming Club’s young swimmers got their 2023 Junior Fenland League campaign off to a dominant start on their trip to Huntingdon on the evening of the 11th March.
Drawn against Huntingdon; Deepings and Ely, Oliver Kenny’s squad of swimmers aged nine to thirteen years old racked up and impressive 25 wins across the 45 event programme.
Thomas Elsdon got the ball rolling in the evening-opening 100M Individual Medley for the Boy’s 12 Year’s category, with Olivia Bradford immediately repeating the feat in the equivalent event for Girls.
Elsdon then found himself back on the block mere minutes from his opening victory, swimming up an age group to contest the 13 Year’s 50M Backstroke – winning once again in a time of 42.70 seconds. Ruby Jackson then made it four wins from four in the Girl’s event.
Joshua Norris and Nellie Chadderton provided the next first place of the evening in the 50M Breaststroke events for 10 year old Boys and Girls respectively, before Adam Jackson touched the wall first in the 12 year old Boy’s 50M Freestyle.
Minutes later Ashton Busby; Ruby Jackson and Charlie Bradford strung together a hat trick of consecutive victories before Den Vojevoda; Valeria Soldatihhina; Harry Clarke and Harriet Reeves went one better by giving West Norfolk four-in-a-row once again as the proceedings moved towards the halfway stage.
Olivia Bradford and Ashton Busby both became two-time race winners in the 12 Years’ Girls’ 50M Backstroke and 13 Years’ Boys’ 50M Butterfly.
Soldatihhina then repeated the achievement herself in the 10 Years’ Girls’ 50M Freestyle before Bradford and Elsdon each completed personal hat tricks.
Ruby Stewardbrown also took home a victory in the 13 Years’ Girls’ 50M Freestyle before further wins from Vojevoda and Clarke preceded a pair of first places from Cory Hill and Ruby Jackson in the final individual events of the evening, the 13 Year Olds’ 100M IM races.
West Norfolk then went on to dominate the closing relay event to end the evening 27 points clear of their nearest challenger Ely and head into the second round of the season sat in second place of the thirteen-team league table – positioned behind table topping Wisbech on tie break alone.
