West Norfolk Swimming Club’s younger members were back in action on Saturday 12th March for the first round of this year’s Junior Fenland League.
The opening fixture at the newly opened Mildenhall Leisure Centre saw West Norfolk face off against Mildenhall; Thetford; Bottisham and The City of Peterborough’s ‘B’-Team.
The evening started strongly with back-to-back wins from Alexander Pattinson and Milly Johnson in the opening two events (Boys & Girls 12 years and under 100M Individual Medley respectively).
This then kickstarted a haul of 14 victories across the 45 races for West Norfolk – Pattinson and Olivia Haddock took a pair of wins in the 12 years and under 50M Freestyle events before Oliver Veale secured first place in the Boys’ 10 years and under 50M Backstroke.
Johnson took a further two race wins in the girls’ 12 years and under 50M Backstroke and 50M Butterfly, whilst Callum New came home first in the boys’ 50M Backstroke and 50M Breaststroke events for the same age category.
Also securing a pair of first places was Eloise Collins (13 years and under 50M Butterfly and 100M Individual Medley), whilst Thomas Elsdon (11/u 50M Backstroke); Logan Greenwood (9/u 50M Backstroke) and Marley Bellamy (10/u 50M Butterfly) all took one win apiece.
At the end of the evening’s proceedings West Norfolk finished in second place, just 8 points shy of the Thetford team, a strong achievement after illness caused a number of last minute team changes and withdrawals.
Final standings after 45 events:
Thetford Dolphins – 160 points
West Norfolk – 152 points
City of Peterborough ‘B’ – 142 points
Bottisham – 112 points
Mildenhall Sharks – 78 points
